Why Idaho Pasture Pigs?
First offered as breeding stock in 2012, Idaho Pasture Pig—also called IPPs—are comprised of Old Berkshire, Duroc and Kunekune breeds.
The Idaho Pasture Pig was bred to be a friendly, grazing, low-maintenance pig well-suited for family farms. These pigs are bred to graze rather than root when kept on pasture, allowing pastures to stay green and nutritious. They are excellent mothers and can overwinter outside due to their thicker coats and premium marbling, which also produces excellent pork.
The meat from grass-fed pigs is higher in omega-3 fatty acids and soil minerals such as iron. It’s also more marbled than traditional pork, with a deep red color (due to the iron) and a sweeter flavor.
With a diet consisting primarily of grass, the pigs will mature to a butcher weight of about 230 to 250 pounds in approximately 10 months. Idaho Pasture Pig boars mature to about 350 to 450 pounds. Sows top out about 250 to 350 pounds.
